The Fugitive Slave Act took place in the 1860's. The Fugitive Slave Act was when runaway slaves had to be returned to their owners. Most slaves ran up North and the people that saw the slaves had to return them to their owners, even if they were abolitionists. An abolitionist is someone that is against slavery. When you returned the runaway slave, you would usually get a reward. Most abolitionists would return the slaves because they needed the money. http://www.delanceyplace.com/cmsAdmin/uploads/fugitive-slave-act-1850-granger-1.jpg
